Shielded twisted pair cables (STP) are Ethernet cables that feature additional protection against electromagnetic interference from external sources, such as radio waves, microwaves, or other network cables. This is achieved by wrapping each pair of wires with a conductive shield, usually made of foil or braided wire, and then enclosing the entire cable with another shield layer. However, this shielding is not effective against low frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) from power cables, which can induce currents and voltages in the network cables and cause signal distortion or data loss. Low frequency EMF can only be reduced by increasing the distance between the power and network cables, or by using a tre-foil cable arrangement, which is a special configuration of three power cables twisted together to cancel out the magnetic fields they generate.

For safety and emergency egress, doors should swing outwards (towards the exit). This is a common building code and best practice in data centers.

Back-up generators are essential for providing power to the data centre in case of a utility outage. However, back-up generators also generate a lot of heat, which needs to be dissipated by a cooling system. The cooling system may rely on water supply, either from the municipal network or from a dedicated tank. If the water supply fails, the cooling system may not function properly, leading to overheating and potential damage to the generators. This could compromise the reliability and availability of the data centre power supply and cause downtime or data loss.

The type of copper wire that is used for grounding the racks to the SRG (signal reference grid) in a data centre is braided copper wire or flat copper strip, according to the CDCP Preparation Guide1 and various web sources234. Braided copper wire or flat copper strip are preferred over thin or thick copper cable for grounding purposes, because they have lower impedance and higher surface area, which allow better dissipation of electrical noise and interference. Moreover, braided copper wire or flat copper strip are more flexible and durable than copper cable, which make them easier to install and maintain. Braided copper wire or flat copper strip should be connected to the SRG using exothermic welding or other code-compliant methods, and should follow the relevant standards and codes, such as ANSI/TIA/EIA-607 and NFPA 70.

When having two non-synchronized power sources, the ATS / STS need to be of the type break before make, which means that the switch disconnects from one source before connecting to the other source. This prevents any short circuit, back feed, or phase mismatch that could occur if the two sources were connected simultaneously. Break before make switches are also known as open transition switches, because they create a brief interruption in the power supply during the switching process. This interruption is usually acceptable for most ICT equipment, as they have internal power supplies or batteries that can handle the transient. However, if the interruption is not acceptable, then the two power sources need to be synchronized before switching, which requires a make before break switch, also known as a closed transition switch. Make before break switches connect to the second source before disconnecting from the first source, which ensures a seamless transfer of power without any interruption. However, make before break switches require that the two sources have the same voltage, frequency, and phase, which can be achieved by using a synchronization module or a phase-locked loop.

Single-mode cabling and multi-mode cabling are two types of fiber optic cables that differ in their core diameter, wavelength, light source, bandwidth, distance, and cost. Single-mode cabling has a smaller core diameter and uses a laser as a light source, which enables it to transmit data over longer distances and higher bandwidths. However, single-mode cabling is also more expensive than multi-mode cabling, because it requires more precise alignment and splicing, and more costly light sources and connectors. Multi-mode cabling has a larger core diameter and uses LEDs or VCSELs as a light source, which makes it cheaper and easier to install and maintain. However, multi-mode cabling also has a shorter distance and lower bandwidth than single-mode cabling, because it suffers from more modal dispersion and attenuation.

The fire triangle is a simple model that illustrates the three elements that a fire needs to ignite and sustain: oxygen, heat, and fuel. Oxygen is the oxidizing agent that enables the combustion reaction, heat is the energy source that raises the temperature of the fuel to its ignition point, and fuel is the material that reacts with oxygen and releases heat and light. Removing any one of these elements can extinguish a fire. For example, water can reduce the heat and the oxygen, sand or soil can smother the fuel and the oxygen, and fire extinguishers can displace the oxygen or lower the temperature.

MTBF stands for Mean Time Between Failures, and it is the arithmetic mean of time between the failing and the subsequent running of the system in a particular time period. MTBF is a measure of reliability that indicates how often a system or component fails during its operation. MTBF can be calculated by dividing the total operating time by the number of failures over a given period. For example, if a system operates for 1000 hours and experiences 5 failures, the MTBF is 1000/5 = 200 hours.

Glass door racks are a type of rack that have solid glass front doors and rear door heat exchangers (RDHx). RDHx are devices that use facility coolant to absorb heat from the exhaust air of the IT equipment and return cool air to the room. RDHx can be either passive or active, depending on the fan configuration. In general, IT hardware within the rack is air-cooled and the door heat exchanger uses facility coolant to absorb heat from exhaust air to return air to the facility at or near inlet air temperature to the rack. This rear door heat exchanger can either be a passive or active solution. When dealing with glass door racks, cool air is injected into the rack from the rear door in a downflow direction. This means that the cool air flows from the top to the bottom of the rack, following the natural convection of the hot air rising. This way, the cool air can reach all the IT equipment in the rack and prevent hot spots or overheating.

According to the Raised Floor Installation Manual, the best practice for cutting holes in the raised floor tile is to draw a cross on the tile and when making a cut-out do not touch a line and avoid the corners1. This ensures that the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of the tile are not compromised. Cutting holes anywhere, touching the line, or cutting the corners can weaken the tile and cause it to crack or collapse1. Additionally, the manual recommends using a drill press or a reciprocating saw with a metal or bi-metal cutting blade, and deburring all sharp edges1.

Waveform distortion is a type of AC power quality anomaly that occurs when the shape of the voltage or current waveform deviates from the ideal sinusoidal shape. Waveform distortion can be caused by nonlinear loads, such as rectifiers, inverters, variable frequency drives, and electronic devices, that draw current in pulses or harmonics. Waveform distortion can result in overheating, reduced efficiency, malfunctioning, or damage of equipment.

The casters and feet under the rack are used to support the weight of the rack and its equipment, and to allow the rack to be moved if needed. However, the casters and feet should also be designed to avoid putting too much pressure on the floor tile, especially if the data centre uses a raised floor system. A too heavy point load on the floor tile can cause the tile to crack, deform, or collapse, which can damage the rack, the equipment, and the underlying infrastructure. To prevent this, the casters and feet should be larger, so that they can distribute the weight over a larger area and reduce the point load. The casters and feet should also be compatible with the floor type and the load rating of the floor tile.

Water sprinkler systems are designed to protect the structure of a building from fire by suppressing or extinguishing the flames with water. Water sprinkler systems are typically installed in the ceiling or walls of a building and are activated by heat or smoke detectors. Water sprinkler systems can reduce the risk of fire spreading and causing structural damage to the building.

According to the EPI Data Centre Training Framework, EMF is a form of electromagnetic interference (EMI) that can disrupt or damage the normal operation of electronic devices, such as servers, network cables, and IT equipment1. High levels of EMF can be generated by power equipment, cell phones, microwaves, TV and radio signals, etc., and can cause data corruption, data loss, system malfunction, and crashes23. Therefore, EMF can cause data centre failures and affect the availability, performance, and security of the data centre. To prevent or mitigate EMF, data centres should follow the best practices for data centre design, layout, cabling, grounding, shielding, and testing14.

An ultrasonic humidifier is a type of cool mist humidifier that uses a metallic diaphragm that vibrates at high frequencies to create water droplets that are added to the air. A fan projects these droplets into the air as mist, which then evaporates and humidifies the room. This type of humidifier rapidly vibrates the water to create a fog or mist.

The most damaging type of floor load for raised floor tiles in a data centre is the rolling load (RL), according to the CDCP Preparation Guide1 and various web sources234. A rolling load is the load that is applied by a moving object, such as a pallet jack, a forklift, or a rack on wheels. A rolling load can cause more stress and fatigue on the raised floor tiles than a static load, such as a concentrated load (CP) or a uniformly distributed load (UDL), because it creates dynamic forces and impacts that can crack, dent, or deform the tiles. Moreover, a rolling load can also damage the pedestals and stringers that support the tiles, and cause the tiles to become loose or misaligned. Therefore, when designing and installing a raised floor system, it is important to consider the maximum rolling load that the tiles can withstand, and to use appropriate materials and methods to enhance the strength and durability of the tiles. For example, some possible solutions include using steel or concrete-filled tiles, reinforcing the edges and corners of the tiles, and using locking or gravity-held systems to secure the tiles.

Fiber-optic cables use light as the source to transmit data. Light pulses are modulated to carry information through an optical fiber. The light is confined in the core of the fiber by total internal reflection at the core-cladding interface. The light travels along the fiber with minimal loss or interference, making it suitable for long-distance and high-bandwidth applications.

According to the CDCP® Preparation Guide, Class A fires involve ordinary combustible materials such as paper, wood and cloth. These materials leave behind ash or embers when they burn. Class A fires can be extinguished by water or other cooling agents that reduce the temperature of the fuel below its ignition point.

Availability is the degree to which a system, product or component is operational and accessible when required for use. It is one of the attributes of reliability, which is the ability of a system or component to perform its required functions under stated conditions for a specified period of time. Availability can be calculated as the ratio of the expected value of the uptime (the time when the system is functional) to the total time (uptime plus downtime) of a system or component. Availability can also be influenced by factors such as maintainability, fault tolerance, redundancy, diagnostics, and logistics.

Mean time between failures (MTBF) is a measure of the reliability of a system or component. It represents the average time that a system or component will operate before it fails. The higher the MTBF, the more reliable the system or component is. MTBF is calculated by dividing the total time of operation by the number of failures that occur during that time. MTBF is used to compare the reliability of similar systems or components, and to help with maintenance planning, inventory management, and system design.

Class C fires involve energized electrical equipment, such as computers, servers, switches, cables, and wiring. These fires require the use of non-conductive extinguishing agents, such as carbon dioxide, dry chemical, or clean agent, to prevent electrical shock and damage to the equipment. Water-based extinguishers, such as Class A or K, are not suitable for Class C fires, as water can conduct electricity and cause electrocution or short circuits.

According to the CDCP Preparation Guide1, risk can be defined as the product of impact and probability. Impact is the measure of the negative consequences or losses that may result from a risk event, such as downtime, data loss, or damage to the data centre. Probability is the measure of the likelihood or frequency of a risk event occurring, based on historical data, expert judgment, or statistical analysis. By multiplying impact and probability, risk can be quantified and compared, which helps in prioritizing and mitigating the risks. For example, a risk event that has a high impact but a low probability may have the same risk level as a risk event that has a low impact but a high probability.
