VKS cluster lifecycle is managed using adeclarative API: you usekubectl with a YAML fileto specify the desired state of the cluster (for example: “how many nodes,” Kubernetes version, sizing, and storage). After the cluster is created, youupdate the YAMLto update the cluster. This is why the correct operational approach is to modify the cluster manifest (cluster.yaml) rather than deleting and redeploying.

Additionally, VKS uses multiple controller layers, whereCluster APIand theVirtual Machine Serviceare responsible for provisioning and managing the lifecycle of the control plane and worker node VMs that make up the VKS cluster. In other words, when you change the declared state for control plane sizing/replica count in the cluster YAML, the platform reconciles to that new state by adjusting the underlying control plane VMs through the supported controllers, instead of requiring disruptive “tear down and rebuild” operations.

So, editing the cluster.yaml to adjust the control plane replica count is the method that matches the documented VKS declarative operations model and controller-driven reconciliation.

Kubernetes Service

When adding a Kubernetes cluster to anexisting vSphere Namespace, the workflow is initiated from within that namespace’s context in the vSphere Client. The administrator first opens the target namespace (as shown in the left navigation where the namespace is selected), then uses theKubernetes Servicearea to create and manage Kubernetes clusters associated with that namespace. In the namespaceSummaryview, theKubernetes Servicetile/card provides the entry point for cluster lifecycle actions, typically via an action link such asManage(and from thereCreate Cluster). This is because the Kubernetes cluster is anamespace-scoped resourcein the Supervisor environment: it inherits namespace-level policies and configuration such as permissions/RBAC, resource limits, storage policies, and networking selections that have already been defined for that namespace. Navigating to other areas likeStorageorNetworkis used to validate or adjust prerequisites (for example, storage policy availability or network settings), but the actual “create cluster” operation is launched fromKubernetes Servicewithin the namespace to ensure the cluster is created under the correct tenant boundary and governance model.

A service mesh is an application networking layer that managesservice-to-service communicationacross Kubernetes clusters, providing consistent connectivity, policy enforcement, and visibility without requiring application code changes.Federationis a service-mesh capability because modern meshes (especially multi-cluster/enterprise implementations) can connect services across multiple clusters and environments, enabling shared identity, cross-cluster service discovery, and uniform policy application (often described as multi-cluster or federated service connectivity). AGraphical User Interfaceis commonly provided alongside the service mesh platform to centrally configure policies (traffic routing, access controls, security settings) and to visualize service topology and health.Observabilityis a core service-mesh outcome: by inserting sidecar proxies (or equivalent dataplane components) into the data path, the mesh can generate consistentmetrics, logs, and distributed tracesfor service traffic, enabling latency/error monitoring and dependency mapping.

The other options are not service-mesh features:Autoscalingis handled by Kubernetes/HPA and metrics pipelines,application backupis typically provided by backup tools (e.g., Velero-like solutions), anddatabase connection managementis handled by application frameworks or database proxies rather than the service mesh itself.

In VCF 9.0, ingress is described as part ofVKS cluster networking. The documentation’s VKS Cluster Networking table lists“Cluster ingress”and identifies its role asrouting inbound pod traffic. It further clarifies that this function is delivered by athird-party ingress controller, and explicitly namesContouras an example (“you can use any third-party ingress controller, such as Contour”).

That mapping is exactly what optionAdescribes: Contour is deployed to provideingresscapabilities so that inbound requests from outside the cluster can be routed to Kubernetes services and pods according to ingress rules. In other words, Contour is not a storage component (that would align to CSI/CNS/pvCSI), not a node lifecycle manager (that is handled by VKS/Cluster API/VM Service), and not an infrastructure health monitoring tool (that would be metrics/observability tooling). VCF 9.0 positions Contour specifically within theingresspart of the networking feature set, makingAthe correct answer.

Amulti-zone Supervisorin VCF 9.0 is designed to deliverplatform resiliency and high availability at the vSphere cluster (zone) failure-domain level. The VCF 9.0 documentation states that a multi-zone Supervisor “leverages three vSphere clusters” (each mapped to a vSphere Zone) and that these zones are used by both “workloads and Supervisor management components to deliver high availability,” exposing “each cluster as an independent, consumable availability zone,” resulting in a “resilient, HA-capable platform.”

This is reinforced in the vSphere Zones guidance: deploying the Supervisor onthree vSphere Zones spreads the control plane VMs across three zones, providing “cluster-level high availability” that protects the Supervisor control plane against asingle cluster-level failure(one control plane VM per management zone).

Because VKS (vSphere Kubernetes Service) runs on Supervisor, distributing Supervisor control plane and workload placement across zones improves overall availability of Supervisor services and Kubernetes consumption in that Supervisor instance.

In VCF 9.0 VKS clusters, network policy is a core Kubernetes networking control implemented by the cluster’s CNI (Antrea or Calico). The VCF documentation’s “VKS Cluster Networking” table describesNetwork policyas the feature that “controls what traffic is allowed to and from selected pods and network endpoints,” and identifies Antrea or Calico as the providers for this capability. That definition precisely matches optionB: it governs pod-to-pod and pod-to-external endpoint communication rules. This is different from ingress routing (which the same table describes separately as “Cluster ingress … routing for inbound pod traffic”), so option C is not correct for “network policy.” It is also different from NodePort behavior (external access via a port on each worker node through the Kubernetes network proxy), which is explicitly listed as “Service type: NodePort.” Finally, creating/operating clusters natively in Supervisor is a broader lifecycle function (Cluster API/VKS API), not the definition of network policy. Helmis the other widely used Kubernetes package manager for installing and configuring applications through charts and values, and is commonly used by DevOps teams on Kubernetes clusters such as VKS for app deployment and configuration management. By contrast, Fluent Bit is a log shipper, Multus is a CNI multiplexer, and Grafana is a visualization tool—none are package management tools.

VCF 9.0 describes backing up workloads on VKS clusters usingVelero(Velero Plugin for vSphere) and shows the backup command pattern scoping backup content bynamespace(for example, velero backup create ... --include-namespaces=my-namespace). This demonstrates thatNamespacesare a primary object type within backup scope (you choose which namespace content is captured). The same section explains that after backup execution,Kubernetes metadata is uploaded to the object store. “Kubernetes metadata” in this context includes standard namespaced resources that represent running workloads and how they are exposed, such asServices(a core Kubernetes API object used to provide stable access to pods).

In addition to namespace scoping, Velero’s selection model commonly includes filtering backed-up Kubernetes objects using selectors (for example, selecting subsets of resources), which aligns with the “objects identified by a label selector” option as an object-selection mechanism within the scope of what Velero captures from Kubernetes APIs (metadata/resources) once the namespace is targeted.

When a stateful pod (like Harbor’s database) is stuck Pending/ContainerCreating or repeatedly failing to attach/mount storage, one of the first checks is whether the PVC’sAccess Modesmatch what the workload and backing storage support (for example, ReadWriteOnce vs ReadWriteMany). In Kubernetes, the PVC and PV explicitly showAccess Modes(for example Access Modes: RWO) when you inspect them.

In the vSphere Namespace UI, theStoragetab is where namespace storage is managed and reviewed (including storage policy assignments that back storage classes/PVCs), making it the natural place to validate the storage configuration being consumed by the Harbor database PVC. VMware’s VCF documentation directs administrators to navigate to a namespace and use theStoragetab for storage-related settings.

TheResourcestab is the Kubernetes-object oriented view for the namespace, where you can locate the PVC object associated with the failing pod and inspect its properties/YAML (including the requested storage class and access mode intent). Namespace permissions explicitly include the ability to view Kubernetes resources within the namespace, which aligns with checking PVC details there.

A Global Namespace in a service-mesh-driven, multi-cluster design is fundamentally anorganizational and policy boundarythat lets platform teams treat multiple Kubernetes namespaces—across multiple clusters/regions—as one logical application domain. That is whyBis correct: it defines an application boundary spanning clusters, which is exactly what “GovApp” needs when its tiers are distributed across regions but must still behave as one application. It also explains whyAis correct: the value of a Global Namespace is that you can applyconsistent identity, security, and traffic policiesacross all member namespaces and clusters, rather than configuring them separately per cluster. This supports uniform mTLS/authorization posture, consistent service-to-service access rules, and standardized routing behaviors regardless of where a service instance runs.

The other options describe outcomes that may be enabled by additional service-mesh features, but they are not the corerequirementsthat define a Global Namespace: distributed ingress/egress is not guaranteed simply by the namespace construct, automatic workload placement is typically handled by schedulers/placement engines rather than the namespace boundary, and centralized logging is an observability capability outside the namespace requirement itself.

A ReplicaSet is a core Kubernetes workload controller used in VKS clusters to maintainavailability and steady-state capacityfor stateless applications. Its primary purpose is to ensure that adesired number of identical pod replicasare running continuously. If a pod is deleted, crashes, or is evicted because a node fails, the ReplicaSet detects that the current number of matching pods has dropped below the target and immediately creates replacement pods to restore the requested replica count. Conversely, if too many matching pods exist (for example, due to manual creation or a transient surge), it scales down by deleting excess pods to return to the desired state.

This behavior makes ReplicaSets foundational to reliable, self-healing application operation in Kubernetes and therefore in VKS. In practice, administrators and DevOps teams usually interact with ReplicaSets indirectly through higher-level controllers likeDeployments, which manage rolling updates and revisions while using ReplicaSets underneath to enforce the replica count for each version of an application. Options A, B, and D map to other Kubernetes objects (Service, StatefulSet, and DaemonSet respectively), not ReplicaSet.

When a container repeatedly crashes (CrashLoopBackOff), the most direct way to capture what the application emitted right before termination is to retrieve the container logs. In Kubernetes, application output written toSTDOUTandSTDERRis captured by the container runtime logging mechanism and exposed through the Kubernetes API for retrieval. In Kubernetes, the component that actuallycreates and runs workloads on a nodeis thekubelet. The kubelet is the node agent that ensures the containers described by PodSpecs are running on that node. VCF 9.0 maps this concept directly into vSphere Supervisor by describingSphereletas “a kubelet that is ported natively to ESXi and allows the ESXi host to become part of the Kubernetes cluster,” showing that kubelet functionality is responsible for running workloads on worker nodes (ESXi hosts in the Supervisor case).

The other options have different roles:etcdis the control plane data store,API Serveris the front-end for Kubernetes API operations, and theSchedulerdecides placement (which node should run a pod). VCF 9.0 even calls out that “the Kubernetes scheduler… cannot place pods intelligently” without visibility into vCenter inventory—reinforcing that scheduling is about placement decisions, not the act of creating/running the workload on the node.

A zonal vSphere Namespace is created as a standard namespace first, then “zonalized” by associating it with one or morevSphere Zonesso workloads can be scheduled according to zone placement rules. You start bycreating the namespacebecause it is the tenancy and governance container where networking, storage access, quotas, and permissions are applied. Next, youassign the zones, since zone association is what makes the namespace “zonal” and determines where Kubernetes workloads (and their node pools) are allowed to land.

With zones set, you configureworkload networking, because namespaces must have the correct network attachment and IP behavior for the workloads that will be placed across the selected zones. Then youassign the zonal storage policy, ensuring that persistent volumes can be provisioned using storage that is valid/available for the zone placement model you selected. After networking and storage access are defined, you setresource quotas/limits(CPU, memory, storage) so multi-tenant consumption stays within governance boundaries. Finally, yougrant RBAC/permissionsso the right DevOps/users can consume the namespace and provision clusters/workloads under the enforced controls.
